Dr. Qureshi specializes in regenerative medicine and sports medicine at GIOSTAR Chicago in Glenview, Illinois, where he provides cutting-edge stem cell therapy and other treatments to promote the healing of musculoskeletal and sports related injuries.
Before coming to GIOSTAR Chicago, Dr. Qureshi provided medical coverage at diverse sports events, from the USA Taekwondo State Championship in North Carolina and the full range of college sports, to wrestling tournaments and Sugar Mountain Skiing in Boone, North Carolina. He also served as the team physician for the Knightdale High School football team and covered the North Carolina Wrestling State Championships.
Dr. Qureshi received his Doctor of Osteopathy at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth. He completed his family medicine residency at SOVAH Health Care in Danville, Virginia and obtained board certification in family medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine from the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians.
Following his personal and academic interest in orthopedics and musculoskeletal injuries, Dr. Qureshi pursued additional training, completing a sports medicine fellowship at Campbell University in Lillington, North Carolina.
While at Campbell University, Dr. Qureshi trained in fracture care, gait analysis, and exercise physiology testing. He also became proficient with musculoskeletal ultrasound, ultrasound-guided procedures, and prolotherapy.
During this time, he also received training in regenerative medicine, including platelet-rich plasma injections and stem cell therapy. As he began focusing on regenerative medicine and its role in musculoskeletal medicine, he conducted several clinical studies including:
- Chondrocyte Differentiation Through Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells with HA Scaffold for Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis
- Synovial Fluid Analysis Between Arthritic and Normal Joints
- Estimation of Body Fat Percentile Using Ultrasound Versus DEXA Scan, Bioimpedance, and Slaughter Scale Caliper Measurements
He also conducted a study on methods to alleviate sores in spinal cord paralysis victims at the University of Houston Lab of Integrated Physiology. Dr. Qureshi is still conducting research pending grant approval.
Dr. Qureshi’s passion for regenerative medicine began during his sports medicine fellowship; then he continued to pursue the field, gaining a broader depth of knowledge through formal education and independent study. As he learned more about stem cell therapy, he began to think about the benefit it could have for his own knee.
He had two meniscal repairs of his right knee following injuries incurred while playing basketball and high school football. As a result, he developed post-traumatic secondary medial compartment arthritis. For the longest time, he lived with regret, thinking that all he could do was keep his knee strong, not gain weight, and ultimately, seek steroid injections as arthritis progressed.
Dr. Qureshi was going through a very difficult time due to slowly losing functionality of his knee. As a medical student, he had assisted in total knee replacements and now lamented over the thought that one day he may be the patient needing a joint replacement.
After considering the evidence, he mustered the courage to have a bone marrow aspiration to harvest his own mesenchymal stem cells, then received an intra-articular stem cell injection to treat his knee. In the weeks that followed, he was astounded at the dramatic improvement in symptoms and functionality in his knee.
He felt as if his old knee had returned, something he could never have imagined a few years back. After receiving such a successful treatment, his desire to further study and progress the field of stem cell medicine grew stronger. Now he’s driven to share the benefits of stem cell therapy with his patients at GIOSTAR Chicago.
